Donald E. Hawkins, better known as “The Muleskinner” of Ontonagon, passed away May 9, 2015 in his home with his wife, Betty.

Donald was 73. He was born in the old Ontonagon Hospital and proudly calls this town his own.

Don was born Donald E. Dembroski. He is one of eleven children. Upon the death of his mother, he was adopted by Guy and Dorothy Hawkins of Lake Linden, where he attended school and graduated in 1959. Then he joined the U.S. Air Force. He worked at the White Pine Mine.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; four children, Donald (Chuck) of Ontonagon, Keith (Teresa) of Mass City, Sandra (Curt) Kasten of Ontonagon, and Dean (Sherry) of Ontonagon; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; three step children, more grandchildren and great kids; siblings, Beverly (Keith) Roehm, Mary (Earl) Applekamp, Clifford (Karen) Dembroski, Larry Cunningham; two step sisters, Dorothy and Betty; brothers-in-law, Don (Laura) Rowley, and Floyd (Candy) Rowley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; several siblings, nieces and nephews.

Don shared his love of music with anyone who cared to listen. He is best known for his rendition of “Muleskinner Blues” and with wife, Betty, made a CD called “A Walk Down Memory Lane”. Betty shared his love of music as they walked their 23 years together, singing and playing music.

Don’s wishes are being honored by his family, to be cremated and to have a celebration of his life with his family and friends.
