John Edwin Pelkola 74 of Trout Creek passed away peacefully at his home on February 23, 2017.
He was born in Trout Creek to George and Esther (Salonen) on August 25, 1942. John graduate from Trout Creek High School. He married Joan Manning on August 17, 1968. John earned a bachelor of science degree from Northern Michigan University. He was a long time industrial arts and drivers education teacher for Ewen Trout Creek High School.
In addition to his career as an educator, John was a public servant for over 40 years. He started as the treasurer of Interior Township, later becoming the supervisor. Near his retirement from teaching he became a commissioner of Ontonagon County. John was one of the founders of SONCO Ambulance and served on several subcommittees within the county.
He is survived by his two children Theresa (Darrin) Viitala of Marquette and Chris (Linda) Pelkola of Champion, grandchildren Easton and Hunter Viitala and Britney, Heidy and Natalie Pelkola, Brothers George (Sharon) Pelkola of Marquette and Ken (Melanie)Pelkola of Trout Creek, sister Carolyn (Bob) Hietamaki of Gwinn and several nieces, nephews and great friends.
John was preceded in death by his wife Joan and his parents.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 Eastern time Thursday, March 2nd at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Trout Creek. Funeral services will begin at 2 PM Eastern time. Spring burial will be in the Trout Creek Cemetery.
