Roger Kohl Stites, 74, of Mass City, MI passed away August 5th in the presence of his family, at the Omega House in Houghton, MI.  Roger was born in Henry, IL to Leslie and Agnes Stites on February 2, 1941.  After graduating from high school, he served in the Army.  During his enlistment he was awarded a rifle sharpshooter badge, and was stationed in Thailand.  Upon returning to the states, he was employed with a surveying company in the Upper Peninsula.  Roger’s love for the U.P. led him to settle there.  He worked for the Ontonagon County Road Commission until his retirement, while raising his family on his farm in Mass City.

Roger’s love for hunting, fishing, gardening, and his farm kept him busy throughout his retirement.  He was an amazing family man, who was a dedicated father, grandfather, and father-in-law.  His grandchildren were the light of his life as he was theirs.

Roger is survived by his three sons: Jesse Kohl Stites, Roger Shane (Hillary) Stites, Timothy Craig (Cynthia) Stites, grandchildren: Kadence Marie, Shayna Lynn, Summer Lynn, Timothy Jett, Danni Rose Marie, Holdyn Leon, and Tyson Kohl; his sister Shirley (Bill) Neid; brother Michael (Nancy) Stites and many other extended family members.

Roger is proceeded in death by his parents; sister Sheryl Cotter; and son Kohl Craig.

Upon Roger’s request, private graveside services will be held at Rousseau Cemetery on August 14, 2015. A celebration of life will be held following graveside services, at his residence, from 6pm – 9pm.

Memorials may be given to the Ontonagon County Cancer Association or the Omega House of Houghton.

The family of Roger Stites would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Geddes and the staff at U.P. Health System - Portage, where he was treated with ultimate love and respect.  Also, to the Omega House for making his final moments peaceful and comfortable, with the presence of his family.  Lastly, to his many friends and neighbors who helped, supported and cared for him throughout this difficult battle.
