Signe M. (Leaf) Smith

March 19, 1929 ~ October 31, 2015 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Signe M. (Leaf) Smith, of Ontonagon, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 31, 2015. She was born to Edward and Anna (Sikkila) Leaf on March 19, 1929 in Covington, MI. Signe grew up in Covington with her six siblings and graduated from L'Anse High School in 1947. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in Marquette, earning her R.N. degree in 1954. She was a compassionate and caring nurse and worked for many years at the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital and later at the OMH Long-Term Care Unit.
 

She married the love of her life, Alfred D. Smith, on October 23, 1954, in Covington.


From this union of more than 61 years, Signe and Alfred had seven children: Linda (James) Rein, David (Yvonne) Smith, James Smith, Thomas (Lisa) Smith, Stephen (Joyce) Smith, Nancy Walker and John Smith.  Signe was a loving and devoted wife and mother and will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

 

Signe adored her family and was blessed with 18 grand-children: Heather (Cory) Luoto; James Rein; Anna (Joshua) Drew; Eric (Danielle), Aaron, Colin, Megan, Brandon, Ellen, Matthew (Samantha), Nathan, Kathryn, Phillip, Jordan and Josiah Smith; Filmore IV, Andrew, and Darius Walker and five great-grandchildren: Lyla and Mikka Luoto; and Payton, Daylyn and Dyceson Drew.

 

Signe was a talented artist and painter who also enjoyed scrapbooking and crafts. She loved flowers, especially roses, and created beautiful pressed flower pictures using flowers from her garden. Signe also loved watching birds and butterflies and enjoyed camping with her family at Norway Lake and Lake Superior.
 

Signe had a strong faith and was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church.  Throughout the years, she attended several national church conventions with her mother, Anna. She was proud of her Finnish heritage and also attended the Salolampi Finish Language Village and several Finn Fests. Signe enjoyed meeting people wherever she traveled and will be remembered for her beautiful smile and caring ways. 
 

Signe was greeted in the Kingdom of Heaven by her parents; son, James Smith; brother, Clarence Leaf; sisters, Viola Leaf, Daisy Lenz and Dorothy Stripe, and grandson James Rein. In addition to her husband and immediate family, Signe is survived by two brothers, Harvey Leaf and Roger (Carolyn) Leaf; brother-in-law, Robert Lenz; sister-in-law, Mary Lee Leaf; sister-in-law, Evelyn Ollila and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

 

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, November 5th from Noon until 2 pm at the Cane Funeral Home with a memorial service beginning at 2:00 pm. Following the service, a luncheon will be served at 4:00 pm at Cane Court.  Interment will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon.
