Eric John Hartzell, “Big E”, Son of Tom and Lori Hartzell, peacefully entered into eternal rest September 24, 2017 with his family at his side. Eric was born on July 25, 1966 in Stambaugh Michigan. He grew up in Ontonagon Michigan, was baptized and confirmed in the Siloa Lutheran Church. He attended Ontonagon area schools graduating in 1984.

Eric entered into service with the US Navy in August 1984. He was Stationed at NAS Whidby Island, WA attached to Attack Squadron 95 While serving with the “Green Lizards” aboard the USS Enterprise he made a world cruise in 1986 and subsequently  fought in Desert Storm 1989. Eric made two more cruises aboard the USS Enterprise and the USS Abraham Lincoln earning numerous citations

After being honorably discharged from the service he worked construction in the Portland area. Eric then returned to his home town of Ontonagon to assist his family during a health crisis.  He continued to work in the Ontonagon area where he met the love of his life Rose.  Rose and Eric were married at the Winola Church on October 24th 2015.

Eric was an avid skier, and carpenter.  He enjoyed being with his family and bear hugging his friends.  Eric had a big heart, and would help anyone who needed it. 

Eric was preceded in death by his father Tom, Grandparents Marie and John Rasmussen, Gladys Sauleen and Sister Kay Cleveland.

He is survived by his wife Rose, children Hunter, Samantha and Anthony. Mother Lori, and Son Garrett (Caitlin) Hartzell. Grandchildren Dainin and Pyper.  A Sister Ann, and Brothers Paul and Carl.  Numerous Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Navy Brothers Mark, Kurt, and David, and Numerous Friends.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 28th at 11 am at the Siloa Lutheran Church in Ontonagon. Friends may call at the church 1 hour prior to the start of the service. Burial and military rites preformed by the Ontonagon County Veterans Association will take place at the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon following the memorial service.
