Frederick "Fred" Allen Rantala
Fred, 81 passed away at his home in Ontonagon on Friday, August 23, 2019. He was born on November 28, 1937 to Wesley and Lydia (Keranen) Rantala. He graduated from Baraga High School and Northern Michigan University. He taught business education in Ida, Michigan for one and a half years before moving to Ironwood, Michigan, where he worked for an accounting firm. He then moved to Ontonagon in 1968 where he was the business manager of Ontonagon Area Schools until his retirement in 1989. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with his family and was a good listener.
He married Janice Weza of Ontonagon in 1963. In Their 56 years of marriage, he always considered her "his Bride." He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Janice; his children Deanna (David) Cassiere, Dale (Lianne) Rantala, Lynn (Bruce) Hackett and Sheryl (Tim) Givens; grandchildren Andrew, Alyssa, Aaron, Nathan, Willa and Kysa; his brother William (Lillian) Rantala of Alston; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Howard Neider will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ontonagon on Friday, August 30, 2019 at 1:00pm with visitation one hour prior.
The Cane Funeral Home of Ontonagon is assisting the family with arrangements.
