Margaret Martin, 98, of Ontonagon died on Wednesday, April 17 at Portage Pointe in Hancock after a long battle with Alzheimer’s dementia.
Margaret was born in Redridge, MI on Oct. 1, 1920, to John (Ilmari) and Katie (Kaisa Paso) Koivu. She graduated from Jeffers HS in 1938 (and loved to tell of riding the train from Redridge to Painesdale for grades 11 and 12.)
Margaret married Reino Marttinen (Ray Martin) in 1941. The family lived in Mass City while Ray owned Marttinen Chevrolet and eventually moved to Ontonagon in 1963.
She was active in her church, Siloa Lutheran, loved to dance, and was known for her strong commitment to her home and family.
Margaret was preceded in death by sons Gary and Glenn, husband Ray, and brothers Raymond, Edward and Robert.
She is survived by son Dale (Vickie) Martin of Midland, MI and daughter Kay (Harold) Seppala of Houghton. Her grandchildren are Sarah (Scott) MacLachlan, Aaron (Sarah) Martin, Ben (Jennifer) Seppala and Emily (John) Kastamo; her great-grandchildren are Kate, Claire, Anna, Grant and Lilias.
The family expresses appreciation to Dr. David Kass, and to the staff at Portage Pointe for the love and excellent care they gave Margaret.
The funeral will be on Saturday, April 20 at Siloa Lutheran Church in Ontonagon with Pastors Jay Welshonse and John Kastamo to officiate. Visitation will be at 10:00 am with the service at 11:00, followed by a luncheon, provided by the church women, of which Margaret had been a big part.
