Matt Schuster, 95, of Ontonagon passed away on June 9, 2019, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital after a short illness.
Matt was born on February 24, 1924 in Ontonagon to Joseph and Elizabeth Schuster. He graduated from the Ontonagon Area Schools with the class of 1942. Shortly after graduating from school, Matt moved to the west coast where he worked for a few years before returning permanently to Ontonagon. On October 3, 1953, Matt married Sophie Darrow; they were married for 63 years. Matt worked as a mason, maintained several residential rental properties and logged on the family farm while raising a family of seven children with Sophie. He was also a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 2931.
Matt enjoyed working in his shop, playing cribbage, fishing, and spending time with his children. He especially looked forward to making maple syrup at his “Sugarbush” every spring. Matt had a great sense of humor and enjoyed sharing jokes with his friends and family. His children will most remember his morning wake-up call of “daylight in the swamp.”
Matt is survived by his seven children, Mary (Kevin) Shields of Foresthill, CA; Tony (Donna) Schuster of Fort Morgan, CO; Tom Schuster of Brussels, WI; Julie (John) Murphy of Reno, NV; Lucy Schuster of Ontonagon; John Schuster of Mount Pleasant, SC; and Lori Schuster (Robert Gesswein) of Arlington, VA, three grandchildren, Shelby Vido; Sophie Huggins; Spencer Schuster, and one great grandchild, Russell Vido along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Sophie, brothers Ernest and Julian and sisters Margaret Fusek and Hedwig Freitas.
Visitation will be on Friday, June 14th at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church followed by a funeral mass at 11:00. Burial to follow at the Holy Family Cemetery. The Cane Funeral Home is assisting the family.
