Obituary

Arne E. Aho, 90, of Mass City died Saturday May 22nd 2010 at the Long-Term Care Unit of Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.

He was born on December 24th, 1919 in Mass City, the son of the late Herman and Evi Aho. He attended Lincoln Elementary School in East Branch, completing the 8th grade.

Arne began working in the woods at an early age. After an honorable discharge from the Army in May of 1943, he worked in factories in Detroit during WWII. He moved back to the Mass City area and made East Branch his permanent home. On October 30, 1948, he married Irene Johnson of Toivola. She preceded him in death on December 9th, 1973.

Arne was a woods worker, truck driver and bulldozer operator. He was hired to work on the Military Hill highway project in the 1960's. He settled on woods work to make a living for his family and established Arne Aho Forest Products. He ran this business until he retired. Arne was also a farmer, raising beef cattle in the 1960's and 70's.

Arne was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed spending time at his hunting camp near Paulding. In his later years, Arne enjoyed watching local baseball and softball games in Mass City and Greenland. He also was a big Detroit Tigers fan, and watched the games on TV.

He is survived by a daughter, Shirley Aho (Frank Raisanen) of Ishpeming; a son, Gary (Becky Petrusch) of Bessemer; a sister, Aune Kaurala of Mass City; a niece, Helen Kaurala of Mass City; a granddaughter, Brooke Raisanen of Ishpeming; and several cousins.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 24th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM EST at Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 25th at 2:00 PM at the Cane Funeral Home. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland.
