Benjamin Houghton (Ben) Chynoweth Sr., 73 of Ontonagon passed away January 13, 2009 with family by his side.

Ben was born March 19, 1935 in Detroit, MI. to Benjamin R. and Helen Chynoweth. He attended school in the Detroit area graduating from Redford High in 1953. Ben attended Michigan Tech and was a member of the Naval Reserve. He married Arlis Weza of Ontonagon, who preceded him in death in 1995. Ben and Arlis made their home and raised their family in Ontongaon. Ben was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church in Ontonagon. He was employed at the White Pine Mine for 39 years.

Ben enjoyed many friends whose lives he touched with his kind and compassionate interest in all who spent time with him. He loved wooden boats, enjoyed fishing, and was an avid reader on many subjects.

He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife Arlis.

He is survived by daughters Diana (Dan) Reath of New London WI., Helen (Paul) Warren of Ontonagon, Beth (Don) Mannikko, Rhinelander WI., sons Ben Jr. of Ontonagon, and David (Priscilla) of Hancock, twelve grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bob Chynoweth and sister in law Fran of Casper Wy., sisters-in-law Jan (Fred) Rantala, and Dorothy Dankwardt.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 15th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cane Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place Friday at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ontonagon with Pastor Howard Neider officiating. Friends may call at the church Friday from 1 until the start of the service. Spring burial will take place in the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon.
