Obituary

Bettie Shankle, 87, of White Pine, MI, passed away on March 3, 2025 at Bayside Village where she had been a resident for the past four months.

She was born on February 19, 1938 to Fred and Elsie (Evett) Kendrick in Black Oak, Arkansas.  She was raised in Arkansas where she met and married Gene Shankle on September 24, 1952.  They resided in Arkansas and Lansing, MI before moving to the UP of Michigan in 1958 where they made their home and raised their family. They were married until his death on August 18, 1986.

Bettie was a homemaker and devoted her life to her children and grandchildren.  After Gene's unexpected death, she worked as a waitress/bartender at Paul's, Konteka, Root Cellar and the Gogebic Lodge until her retirement.  She was also a member of the White Pine Legion Women's Auxiliary.

She enjoyed traveling to visit and spend time with family, gardening, helping to raise her grandchildren and playing cards with her good friends, Sue Kemppainen and Judy Yaklyvich.

Bettie was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son and daughter.

Surviving are her children, Bobby (Kelly) of Marquette, MI, Babette (Bryan) Linna of Ontonagon, Bud (Evelyn) of San Pedro, CA and Peggy (Mike) Kukanich of Ontonagon along with her sisters, Susie (Dale) Irving and Flo (Geron) Self both of Little Rock, Arkansas, Betty (Tracy) Dockery of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and one sister-in-law, Donna Compton of Smithville, TN.

She is further survived by her grandchildren Joan (Mark) Kelly, Bobby Ryan, Karlie, Kenda (Sergio) and Cole Shankle and Tory (Paola) Hill. Great-grandchildren Emily, Katelyn and Tyler Kelly, Jacob, Joey and Riley Ryan, Shine Hoover, Valentina and Ryker Hill, one great-great grandchild, Ollie Arthur, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service is being held on July 13, 2025, at Cane Funeral Home with visitation from 11:00am - 12:00pm, and service at 12:00pm with the burial at Riverside Cemetery, Ontonagon.

A luncheon will take place at the VFW in Ontonagon, following the burial.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Bayside Village for their compassionate care during her final months.
