Betty Honkala, 100, went home to the Lord on January 18th, 2024. She was born in Appledore North Devon, England on September 16th ,1923, to parents William and Keren (Eastwood) Brend.
She became a war bride on July 19,1944 when she married Wayne E Honkala, who had been stationed in the US Army in Westward HO. They were united in marriage in Bideford, England. She came to a new country the following year, and her and Wayne resided in Rockland Township until his death in 1984. Later in life, she would return to England on several occasions to visit family and friends. Betty lived at her residence until she became ill and was unable to stay at home and moved into Aspirus Ontonagon Long Term Care until the nursing home closed. She was then moved to Gogebic Medical Care in Wakefield, MI. in 2021 and resided there until her death. This is where she celebrated her 100th birthday with family, friends and staff at her side.
Betty was a long-time devoted member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Rockland, and enjoyed spending time with her family and her little dog Waddie. She was very supportive of her Grandchildren who referred to her as "Nana."
She is survived by her daughter, Keren Honkala Seid, Grand Daughters Victoria {Roger} Haapala, Elizabeth Hollowell, Great Grandsons, Prescot Hollowell Jr. and Jayce Haapala. Great Great Grandchildren Chyanne Hollowell and Jayden Haapala, Special Niece and great Nephew Shirley and Dennis Roehm along with other numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Keren Brend, Beloved Husband Wayne, Granddaughters Meredith and Kristen Seid, Great Grandson Cody Wayne Haapala and Son in Law Gordon Seid Jr.
The family would like to express a special thank-you to her friends and church family for their love, prayers, and support and to the staff of Gogebic Medical Care for their exceptional love and care.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, January 23rd at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Rockland, with Pastor Pete Lemoine officiating at 11:00 am EST. A luncheon will be served after the service in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will take place in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in Rockland Michigan
