Carl Neil Koistenen 91 of Ontonagon died Sunday, July 2, 2006 at the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital. Carl was born July 1, 1915 in Green, to the late Carl and Hilda Koistenen. He graduated from Ontonagon High School and worked at several different jobs. Carl then served in the U. S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946. He received a letter of citation for his actions in rescuing survivors from the U.S.S. Turner. On March 10, 1946 he was united in marriage to the former Angela Damanti. Following his discharge from active duty, Carl attended the University of New Mexico, receiving his Bachelor's Degree in 1951. Later in 1951, he moved to the area, working for Pace Associates as a surveyor. Carl's main job was the surveying of the area that is now the town of White Pine. He concluded his working years as a surveyor with the State of Michigan, retiring in 1978. Carl was an avid fisherman, hunter and skier. He was an accomplished carpenter and an all around handy man. Carl was also a member of the Disabled Veteran's of America. He is survived by his wife Angela Koistenen of Ontonagon, daughters JoAnne Barnes of Denver, CO and Janet Koistenen of Gwinn, grandchildren Jackie Kosey Pietla and Chris Skoviak of Negaunee, Corey Skoviak of Hollywood, CA and Sienna Kegan of Marquette, great-grandchildren Anthony and Anastasia Skoviak of Marquette and many nieces and nephews. Carl was precede in death by his parents, daughter Carole Kosey, an infant twin brother, brothers Onni, Berger "Red" and Wilfred and sisters Lina and Laila. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 8th at 11 a.m. at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon with Pastor Paul Sewell officiating. Friends are invited to call 1 hour prior to the start of the service. Inurnment will be at the Green cemetery in Green, MI.
