IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carl August
Nelson
May 17, 1939 – February 11, 2007
Carl August Nelson, 67, of White Pine, Michigan, died February 11,2007 at Marquette General Hospital after a three-week battle with pneumoma.
Carl was born May 17, 1939 in Stambaugh, Michigan to the late Carl Algot Nelson and Thyra Augusta Johnson. Carl attended Iron River Central and Iron River High Schools, and graduated in 1957.
On July 11, 1959, he married Carol Jean Ward at the First Lutheran Church of Iron River, and resided in the Iron River area until moving to White Pine in 1968.
In his youth Carl delivered newspapers to the Riverside and Stambaugh Hill areas, and was a pin-setter at the Riverside Paladium bowling lanes. As a young man he was employed as a mechanic in Iron River at Lindstrom's Ford Garage, Loo's OIds and Cadillac Sales, and as a machine operator for Caterpillar Inc. of Joliet, Illinois. In 1966 Carl gained employment with the White Pine Copper Company where he worked as a driller-blaster in the underground units from 1966-88, and as a Tankhouseman in the Electro-Refinery from 1988-98. Carl retired in 1998 after 31 years of employment with the company.
Upon his retirement, Carl provided medical care for his wife of 47 years, who also passed away recently after a long-fought battle with diabetes. Carl was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed deer hunting and fishing in the Iron River and White Pine areas. You could often find Carl toting his rifle or shotgun under his arm during the fall months, or inspecting the deep water pools along the Big Iron River in the spring. Carl had hoped to return to all of his favorite spots in coming years.
Carl is survived by a daughter, Lynn M. Brown of Mass City, a son, Carl A. Nelson Jr. of Silver City; a granddaughter, Kari Lynn Miles of Lansing, a grandson, Kevin Lee Miles of Madison, Wisconsin; a sister, Margaret (Merton) Belongie of Iron River, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, on January 14, 2007; his father in 1980, his mother in 1941, his stepmother, Nora (Brewer) in 1963; a sister, Joan M. Ghiotto of Gaastra, Michigan in 1973, and a sister, Marjorie Nelson of Stambaugh in 1992.
Plans for internment in the Resthaven Cemetery of Iron River are pending and arrangements are being made with the assistance of the Cane Funeral Home of Ontonagon.
Carl will be deeply missed by the many friends, family, and co-workers that knew him.
