Cheryl Anne Haapala, a devoted mother and wife, left this world on July 27th, 2026 with family at her side. Cheryl had been dealing with multiple health problems during the last couple of years as well as a broken heart since her husband, Roger Haapala Sr., passed away four years ago. 

Cheryl was born on January 12th, 1950 at St. Joe’s Hospital in Hancock, Michigan. Her parents were the late John and Lois Turpeinen. They raised her in Mass City, Michigan. Cheryl attended school in Mass City and graduated from Ontonagon Area High School in 1968. She married her sweetheart, Roger on November 4th, 1968, and became a mother for the first time on July 29th, 1970. Roger and Cheryl lived in Bruce Crossing for a short time before eventually moving to Rockland, Michigan where they spent the rest of their married life. She was employed at Syl's Restaurant for many years as a cook and managed the restaurant in Mass City. She would become a mother three more times, giving her a total of four children. She was the most caring mother a child could ask for and would do anything for her children. 

Cheryl enjoyed spending time with her family and following the kids and grandkids' activities whatever they might be. She also enjoyed going to rummage sales, occasional trips to the casino, and attending Quarters for a Cause in Bruce Crossing, Michigan. She was a great cook and kept her family well fed. Cheryl was a devout Catholic and attended Mass at St. Mary's in Rockland, Michigan.

Cheryl is survived by her Children, Roger Haapala Jr. {Vickie} of Rockland, John {Mandy} Haapala of Stevens Pointe Wi., Danielle {Leon} Sutherland of Lake Linden, and Joseph {Laura} Haapala of Ontonagon. She is also survived by sisters, Debbie {Bob} Clark of Ontonagon and Susie (Steve) Hebert of Green Bay, as well as 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, and 2 expecting grandchildren. Also surviving are in laws Gail Luce, Arvid {Jan} Haapala, Dianne Haapala of L'Anse, Carol Johnson of Trout Creek, Buck Tarnowski, and numerous other relatives. 

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lois Turpeinen, grandparents, Hilda and Andrew Turpeinen, Edward and Kate on the Maloney side. Husband Roger Sr., sisters Lori Johnson and Peggy Tarnowski, daughter in law, Jorie Haapala and grandson Cody Haapala. 

Funeral Services will be held at 4PM EST, Thursday July 30th, 2026, at St. Mary's Church in Rockland, Michigan. Father Brian Gerber will officiate. Family and friends can gather at the church one-hour prior to visit with the family. Interment will commence immediately after the services at Woodlawn Cemetery in Rockland, MI. A luncheon will follow at the Rockland Township Hall. The family would like to thank the Emergency room and Med-Surg staff as well as all others at Baraga County Memorial Hospital who took great care of our mother in her final days. We also thank Cane Funeral Home for assisting with final arrangements.
