IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy Rogers
Gorman
December 17, 1917 – March 19, 2012
Dorothy Rogers Gorman, a prominent Ontonagon businesswoman as well as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 94 Monday, March 19, 2012 in Houghton.
Services will be Friday, March 23 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. and Mass at 11.
Born Dorothy Ethelyn Cane to Ruth (Burns) and Joseph Cane on Dec. 17, 1917 in White Pine, she could best be described as a tender spitfire. She was an astute businesswoman while at the same time doting on a family that came to include three children, 13 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was married to John Rogers in 1935 and together they raised Carolyn, Robert and Nancy in Ontonagon. Robert and Cecelia live in DeBary, FL., Nancy and Stanley Domitrovich in Ontonagon and her beloved Carolyn, who preceded her mother in death, is survived by her husband Robert Schon of Ontonagon.
Dorothy's first job was not a harbinger of what was to come. She lasted less than a day at a mushroom packing plant. As an entrepreneur, she had much more staying power. She owned and operated Rogers' Inn-Towne Hotel for 27 years and was also owner of the Inn-Towne Pharmacy and Gift Shop. When she "retired" to New Port Richey, FL., she opened the Nu-You Toning Salon.
She was never all work and no play. She loved to both golf and bowl as well as traveling, particularly on cruise ships. After the U.P. and Florida, the Caribbean was almost a third home to her.
Family was always first, however. She was married to John Rogers until he passed away in 1972. She married Harry Gorman in 1984 and shared her undying enthusiasm with him until he passed away in 2000.
Meanwhile, the family was growing. Son Bob had Robert (Diane) Rogers, Brooksville, FL.; Richard (Cynthia) Rogers, Brooksville; Susan (Joseph) Nessman, Park Falls, WI.; Nancy (Walter) Gaulke, Park Falls; Kathryn (Paul) Feuerer, Park Falls; and Tina Marie Rogers, Orlando. Daughter Nancy had Sally (John) Zawlucki, Prior Lake, MN.; Steve (Kim) Domitrovich, Superior, WI.; Cheryl (Jon) Labyak, Ontonagon; and Jenny (Tim) Tobias, Woodruff, WI. Carolyn had John (Myrna) Schon, Iron Mountain; Kenny (Laurie) Schon, Ishpeming; and Susan (Tom) Pestka, Ontonagon.
Dorothy's spirit lives on in the 40 great and great-great grandchildren of the next two generations.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husbands John and Harry, daughter Carolyn, her parents, step-father Mike O'Rourke and brother Russell Cane.
