Eileen Minda Huhta, born June 20, 1927, in Paynesville, Michigan, passed away on September 1, 2026, surrounded by the legacy of a long life devoted to family, faith, friendship, and community.

She was the youngest of nine children born to Sophia and Henry Haapala. Raised in the area, she attended local schools and was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where her faith remained an important part of her life.

In October 1944, she married Edwin Kamunen. Together, they raised two children, Jack and Sandy, and built a life that included an especially memorable chapter as the builders and operators of the Gem Motel. Edwin preceded her in death in September 1968.

She later married Ken Huhta, and the couple made their home in Livonia, Michigan, until retirement brought them back to Bruce Crossing. Ken preceded her in death in April 2009.

Throughout her life, she remained active and engaged in the people and community around her. She was involved with her church and the Senior Citizens Club and enjoyed traveling, shopping, gardening, and, most of all, spending time with friends and family. A talented artist, she particularly enjoyed oil painting, creating pieces that reflected both her creativity and her appreciation for beauty.

Family was an enduring source of joy. She is survived by her daughters, Sandy (Tom) Schmidt and Shannon (John) Bagnasco; son Greg (Cheryl) Huhta; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Jack Kamunen, who died March 2, 2005, and Bob Huhta; her husbands, Edwin Kamunen and Ken Huhta; her parents, Sophia and Henry Haapala; and her siblings, Mary Huhta, Lempi Sirvio, Elsie Pokela and brothers Ted, Albert, George, Waino, and Eino.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Gogebic Medical Care Facility for the loving and compassionate care they provided and also to the at home caretakers: Cathy, Sharon, Peggy and Michelle. These ladies took care of Eileen for a few years before she went into the nursing home. That care and devotion will always be remembered.

Her life spanned nearly a century-a life filled with family, creativity, faith, travel, friendships, and the simple pleasure of tending a garden. Those who loved her will remember not only the many years she lived, but the people, places, and memories she gathered within them.

A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Paynesville, MI. Visitation will take place from 10:00am - 11:00am, with the service at 11:00am with Pastor Kay Richter officiating. The burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Bruce Crossing.
