Obituary

Faye Anita (Davis) Powelson, 87, of White Pine passed away October 13, 2012 at the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital Long Term Care Unit.

She was born January 19, 1925 in Wakefield, MI to parents Harry and Gertrude (Varcoe) Davis. Faye went to school in Matchwood and graduated 2 grades early in the 10th grade from Ewen. She got her welding certificate and worked in a machine shop during WWII.

Faye met her husband, Donald R. Powelson, while working in a factory in Lower Michigan. He told all his buddies he was going to marry her at first glance, which he did on April 29, 1944. Together, they raised 4 children, and Faye was the "Kool-Aide Mom" for them and their friends. She always had kids around.

Later, Faye became a Deputy and her husband became Sheriff of Ontonagon County for 4 terms. They resided in the jail as their home. Once her husband became ill, she took over as Undersheriff. She also did all the cooking and laundry for the "boarders," as she made her children call the prisoners. She respected everyone and everyone respected her. Everybody loved her cooking. Faye was also the first woman to ever pass and receive a Breathalyzer Certificate, her score was even higher than the men!

After the police life, they moved out to sunny California. Following Don's death Faye worked two years doing home care. When her youngest daughter, Penny, passed away, she moved back home to White Pine and lived there up until two years ago, when she became a resident of Long Term Care. At Long Term Care, she was able to reconnect with many of her childhood friends again.

Faye loved doing yardwork, planting her flowers and taking care of birds. You could say she was always a "country girl" at heart. She loved people and they loved her. She was a good Christian.

Faye is survived by her children Ronnie J. (Diane) Powelson of White P ine, Glenda M. Orr of Bakersfield, CA and Colleen D. Kossman (Jeovanni Camacho) of White Pine. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers Ross (Barb) Davis of Bruce, WI and Joe Davis of Holly, MI and sister, Julia Myers of Waterford, MI; sisters-in-law Eleanore Davis of Stanford, MI and Barb Davis of Ladysmith, WI; and brother-in-law Mac McCumber of Kimball, MI.

In addition to her parents, Faye was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; daughter, Penny C. Powelson; brothers Grant, Lyle, Lonnie, and Elvin Powelson and sisters Eunice McCumber, Betty Perry, Alice Otis, Donna Windsor and Evelynn Davis. She was also preceded in death by sisters-in-law Hazil Davis, Bea Davis, Carol Davis and brothers-in-law Nathan Myers, Gene Perry and Art Windsor.

A Memorial Service for Faye will be held Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon with Pastor Ted Trudgeon officiating.
