Obituary

George Dowd Mogan, age 84, passed away on March 11, 2013 after an extended illness.

George was born October 7, 1928 in Neenah, Wisconsin to Cyril Arlington Mogan and Dorothy Donelda Dowd Mogan. He attended Ontonagon Schools, graduating in 1946. Upon graduation, George entered the US Army and served 7 years including service in occupied Japan with the military police, in Asia where he was an aide to General McArthur and in New York harbor where he skippered the General's Staff fishing boat, taking daily fishing excursions on the Hudson River and out into the Atlantic Ocean. George would also tell of being inside the Empire State Building at the time it was struck by a B-25 Bomber.

George married Jeanne Maria Olson on October 29, 1947 while serving in New York. They returned to Ontonagon following completion of his Army service and he began working for the Milwaukee Road railway as a locomotive fireman. After several years, he returned to his police career which included his election and service as Sheriff of Ontonagon County during 1963-64. Following his term as Sheriff, he began work for the US Postal Service in Ontonagon and continued there until his retirement in 1988.

In retirement, George spent his time gardening at his Potato River Farm and camping with his friends in the Ontonagon Camping and Tramping Club. George and Jeanne spent their winters as snowbirds in the southwest including Santee, California during their early retirement years and later, in Benson, Arizona. He could often be found ending his day at the Ontonagon Eagles Club or the Dry Dock Bar where a long neck Blatz and political conversations were favored.

George is survived by a daughter Linda (Karl) Wadman, son Michael (Ann) Mogan both of Ontonagon, and daughter Sally (Mike) Easley of West Bloomfield, MI, two Grandsons Shane (Jolene) Wadman of Ontonagon and Tim Easley of West Bloomfield, MI, and four Great Grandchildren, David Wadman, Brian Mogan Jr., Jeremiah Mogan, and Isabelle Mogan.

He was predeceased by his parents, wife Jeanne, and grandsons Brian Mogan, Patrick Mogan, and Michael "Scotty" Easley.
