Gladys M. (Johnson) Wirkkala, 90 of Greenland, passed away June 2, 2014 at Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital's Long Term Care Unit.
Gladys was born in Menominee, MI to George and Melvina (Lessard) Johnson on May 23, 1924. She married Reino Wirkkala, and they made their home in Ontonagon, and later, Greenland. Gladys loved to knit and crochet, as well as collect cookbooks. She also enjoyed bingo, feeding the birds, fishing, listening to the radio and spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Gladys was exceptionally talented at butchering and processing deer and bear.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Reino; grandson George; sisters Marilyn, Shirley, Helen and Eleanor; brothers Billy and Willard; brother-in-law Niilo and sister-in-law Helmi.
Gladys is survived by her children George (Joyce) Wirkkala, John (Eileen) Wirkkala and Nancy (Duke) Trebilcock; grandchildren Lisa, Debbie, Pam, John, Kelly, Colleen and Charlotte; 17 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; brother Art Johnson; sister Hanessa "Tootie" Younke; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services for Gladys will be held Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. and continue until the time of service. A luncheon will follow at Cane Court.
