Helen (Sankie) Hartzell, 90 of Ontonagon, MI passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in Baraga, MI   Helen was born in Highland Park, MI to Otto and Ina (Kalliainen) Sanquist on March 9, 1926.  She is a graduate of Jeffers High School in South Range, MI and continued her education in Nursing where she attended and recieved her degree from St. Joseph School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.  Helen worked at the VA Oscar G. Johnson Hospital in Iron Mountain, MI, Ontonagon Hospital in Ontonagon, MI, New Iberia, Louisiana at the Dauterive Hospital, LaCroix Hospital in White Pine, MI as Head Nurse, then back to Ontonagon Hospital where she retired after many years of Nursing.

Helen had a great interest in working in the Emergency Room, Operating Room and Labor and Delivery which resulted in her being present at the delivery of many members of our community.  She enjoyed traveling, the outdoors, bird watching, picking agates along Lake Superior and most of all spending time with her friends and family.

She is survived by her daughter, Louise (Lulu) Dewey (Paul) of Saulte Ste. Marie, MI and her five grandchildren; Aaron (Tara), Jennie, Kate Born, Max and Jimmy Ison, also her three great-grandchildren; Nikki, Andrew Born and Liam Behling.  She is preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.  The Cane Funeral Home of Ontonagon is assisting the family with arrangements.
