Helen Ione Kalivoda, age 98, of Ontonagon, passed away peacefully on October 20 at her home.
Helen was born in Trout Creek, Michigan on January 1, 1916 to Clyde and Irene (Roehm) Hayward. She graduated from the Ontonagon High School in 1932 and from County Normal in 1933. She taught at the Norwich School and the Beck School for one year.
Helen met her future husband, George Kalivoda, when he was at Camp Ontonagon in the Civilian Conservation Corps. They were married in Ontonagon on July 17, 1938, and made their home in Berwyn, Illinois until returning to Ontonagon in 1945. The built their home in Silver City, and for several years owned and operated Pine Crest Gift and Souvenir Shop. Helen worked for many years as secretary to the General Manager of the Ontonagon Paper Mill, and also for a short time in the purchasing department at White Pine Copper Company.
She was an active member of the Ontonagon United Methodist Church, sang in the choir for many years, taught Sunday School, and had received a Lifetime Certificate as Lay Speaker. She was also active in the United Methodist Women, and had served as a Marquette District officer, and also a Detroit Conference officer. Helen was a member of the Ontonagon Woman's Club, and was a long-time member and leader of the Kitchen Band. She enjoyed visiting, and had such wonderful stories to tell! She loved the Lord, her family, her church and her friends.
Helen is survived by her children, Irene (Harold) Amos, David (Polly) Kalivoda and Cora (John) Voss, her sister, Myrtice Coe, of Laura, Illinois, sister-in-law, Helen Hayward of Westfir, Oregon, Rodney (June) Roehm of Marengo, Wisconsin, grandchildren: Tracey (Tim) Rader, of Ontonagon, Tim (Tana Hefley) Amos of Lincoln, Nebraska, Kevin (Nicole Perrault) Voss of Green Bay, WI, Leanne (Monty) Wiertzema of Breckenridge, MN, Philip (Amie) Voss of Ontonagon, Dawn Schauer of DePere, WI, Heather Hansen of West DePere, WI, and Lori Ellison of Morrison, WI, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George (Kelly) Kalivoda, and her brother, Clyde R. Hayward.
A Memorial Service for Helen Kalivoda will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday October 25 at the Ontonagon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Steinberg officiating. Visitation will be from 11 AM until the time of the service. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon. The Cane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Ontonagon United Methodist Church. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Gerald Takala, the caring doctors and nurses at Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital, and to the nurses at Aspirus Keweenaw Home Nursing.
