Helmi Ahola 84 of Mass City passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at the Maple Manor Nursing Center in Ontonagon.

She was born April 15, 1923 to Malkias & Kreeta Lukkari in Mass City, MI.

Helmi married Matt Ahola and together they raised three children on a dairy farm. She enjoyed the farm life. The family farm was a gathering place for friends and family. Helmi was very hospitable.

Helmi's favorite activities were cooking, canning and making homemade bread. Her specialty was making Finnish homemade cheese for friends and family at special occasions. She did work as a cook and waitress at the Mass Restaurant. Helmi was a member of the Wainola Lutheran Church.

Helmi is survived by daughters Phyllis (Jacob) Gauthier of Ontonagon, MI and Sonja (Gerald) Niemi of Mass City, MI, 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, a sister Helen Hedler of Wausau, WI and special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Matt, son Harvey, 2 sisters Impi Lukkari and Hilja Keranen and two brothers Hugo & Toivo Lukkari.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 8th at the Wainola Lutheran Church with Pastor John West officiating. Spring burial will be in the Rousseau Cemetery.

The Cane Funeral Home is assisting the family.
