Hulda (Kujala) Peterson, 99, of Ontonagon, MI passed away Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital Long Term Care Unit, where she had resided since June, 2009.

Hulda was born August 5, 1911 in Atlantic Mine, MI, the daughter Jonas and Fanny (Koski) Walitalo. On May 19, 1933, she was married to Reino Kujala in Ontonagon. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1969. They had 2 children: Judy and Cindy, who preceded her in death at a very young age.

In September 1974, Hulda married John Peterson. He preceded her in death on September 7, 1980.

Hulda enjoyed cooking and baking, especially pasties, bread and cinnamon rolls. She made pasties until the age of 96. She also loved animals, particularly cats, which she had all of her life. Her last "kids" (as she called them) were Susie and Daisy.

Hulda is survived by 2 nieces, Florence Tollefson of L'Anse and Sharon (Jerry) Johns of Ontonagon; five nephews, Gene (Carol) Walitalo of Livonia, MI, Donald (Jenny) Hibbeln of Trevor, WI, Ken (Rosemary) Wettberg of Boscobel, WI, Roger Wettberg of Milwaukee, WI and Don (Kathy) Polo of Howell, MI. She is also survived by special great-nephew, Greg (Jackie) Johns of Ontonagon and great-niece, Michelle (Darrell Maki) Johns of Gladstone, MI as well as numerous other great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hilma Hibbeln, Hilda Polo, Hilia Wettberg and infant sister, Jenny; brothers, August, Reino, and infant brothers, Waino, Jacob, Eino and Ted; nephews Raymond (Shirley) Hibbeln, Walter (Vernamae) Hibbeln, Jerry (Bea) Wettberg; and nieces Elaine Wettberg and Janet McMahan.

Funeral Services for Hulda (Kujala) Peterson will be held on Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Siloa Lutheran Church in Ontonagon, with Rev. Jeannie Manning officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. EST until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. EST, with a luncheon to follow.

Spring interment will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2011.
