Ione attended Ohio Northern University and, in 1941, married Robert "Kelly" Thompson. During Kelly's service in the Army Air Corps, Ione lived in Florida and Kansas before returning to Metamora after World War II. Ione and Kelly lived on a farm in Ohio, raising six children, until the family moved to Paradise, Michigan in 1958.

She is survived by five children: Patrick (Missy) of Arnold, Maryland; Molly (Dr. Gerald) Takala of Ontonagon; Bridget (Lyle) Nodurft of Paradise; Tim of New Orleans; and Terry (Kathe) of Ontonagon and Stafford, Virginia.
