Jack Oscar Heikkila 99 of Green passed away Friday, January 11, 2008 at Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.

He was born in Jyvaskyla, Finland on March 19, 1908 to Oscar & Anna Lydia (Sellman) Heikkila. Jack immigrated to Ontonagon at the age of 10 months old with his mother and older sister to join his father who had arrived a year before. He also lived in Firesteel, Woodspur and White Pine before the family settled on the family farm in Green in 1919.

Jack married Sylvia Heiti in 1945 and they had 2 children, Sharon Jacquelyn and Jack Fredric. As a young man, Jack began working in the lumber camps and helped operate the Green Store for his sister and brother-in-law. At that time he was the last postmaster of Green. During the 1930's and 1940's he ventured to the Detroit area several times to work at various jobs. Jack returned Green to operate his business. In the early 1950's, he and his wife Sylvia purchased the Green Store. They operated the store until 1967. During that time he also worked as a security guard at the White Pine Copper Company.

In Jack's lifetime he enjoyed music, dancing, hunting, trapping, fishing, snowshoeing, playing pool and riding his four wheeler in the woods. He was known for relating his famous stories, memories and songs. Jack was looking forward to his 100th birthday, falling only 2 months short.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia, his son Jack Fredric and his 2 sisters Margaret Lane and Eva Cusack.

Jack is survived by his daughter Sharon, his granddaughter Lisa and his great-granddaughters Lianna, Lynzi, Lily and Luci, cousins Irene Goulet, Gail & George smith, niece Carol Harris and nephews Tom Cusack, Raymond, John & Robert Heiti as well as several other relatives and close friends.

At Jack's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Cane Funeral Home on Thursday, January 17th at 1 p.m. A luncheon will follow at the Eagles Club. Friends may view Jack's obituary and leave condolences at canefuneralhome.com.
