Jack Porter Martin passed away in his sleep on September 11th, 2015 in Seattle, Washington.
He was born April 23rd, 1921 to D.C. and Elizabeth Martin, in Caples, West Virginia. In October of 1942, Jack married Rose Ellen Plutchak from Mass city. He entered the Army in 1943, and served with the 71st infantry under Gen. Patton attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. After his discharge, he moved to Rockland, Michigan and began running a service station, first with his brother-in-law Richard Plutchak in Mass City, and then starting his own service station in Rockland. Jack also worked as a welder at the White Pine Mine and for Fox Valley Road Construction. He moved to Detroit with his family in 1960, buying a grocery store from his widowed sister Mina June Fitzgbbon , which he operated until 1980 along with other small businesses he created. He moved to the Seattle area in 1997 to be near his daughters Peggy and Mary and their families.
Jack loved fishing, especially with his brother Ted, talking politics, gardening, popcorn, exercising his wry sense of humor, music, Rose Ellen's cooking, visiting his family, bragging about his children's accomplishments, and his grandchildren.
He is survived by; his brother, Gene Martin, sister-in-law, Dixie Penman, his children; Kathleen Martin, Peggy Martin Kreger (Brian), John Martin (Jennie), Fred Martin (Linda) and Mary Martin; as well as his grandchildren; Andrew, Jessica, Jack, Lizzie, Becky, Thomas and great-grandchildren; Jaiden, Annalise, and James.
Jack was proceeded in death by his parents, D.C. and Elizabeth Martin, wife Rose Ellen, his brothers and sisters; Lena and Dillard Vaught, Mina June and Harry Fitzgibbon, Ted and Beulah Martin, Vera and Al Bashour, Harry and Diane Martin; children, Michael, Paul, Susanne and granddaughter, Suzanne Harnevious.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 26th at Siloa Lutheran Church, Ontonagon, Michigan at 11:00 AM with the interment following at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Rockland, Michigan. A luncheon will follow the interment at Siloa Lutheran in Ontonagon.
