Jack Merrill 76 of Ontonagon passed away unexpectedly September 8, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born December 17, 1932 in Trout Creek son of the late Gordon & Ione Merrill. Jack graduated from Ontonagon High School with the class of 1951. He served his country for the next 5 years in the Navy Seabees.

Jack worked in Massachusetts as a carpenter. Following his retirement in 1995, he returned home to Ontonagon. Jack was a member of the Elks Club and the carpenters union in Massachusetts and the Rockland American Legion Post. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Jack is survived by his significant other Joanne "Charlie" McCarthy of Ontonagon, son Jack D. (Ellen) Merrill, Jr. of MA, daughter JoAnn (Jim) Johnson of NH, 4 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, sister JoAnn Smallen of Minneapolis and his faithful dog Chrissy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Joseph Merrill.

Visitation services will be held Sunday, September 13th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon. Funeral services will take place Monday, September 14th at 11 a.m. at the Cane Funeral Home. Friends may also call at the funeral home on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon with Military rites preformed by the Ontonagon County Veteran's Association.
