Obituary

James Edmond Clark, age 87, passed away peacefully after a long struggle with multiple medical problems. He was born on June 25, 1939 in Ontonagon, MI, son of the late Leo and Agnes Clark. While he later graduated, he'd left the Class of 1957 early to join the US Navy and was honorably discharged. He returned to Ontonagon and married Sarah “Sally” Guzek. They had eight children and later divorced. His career in construction brought him to parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Texas. A devout Catholic and member of the Knights of Columbus, he faced life with quiet and prayerful strength.

His children are grateful to his second wife, Judy, who cared for him selflessly during his lengthy decline. Because of her dedication, the kids were able to bring him back to the very house he was born in and that his father had built, allowing him to spend his final years right where his life first began. James was also an incredibly devoted son who stepped up to care for his own parents as they aged.

Through all of life’s chapters, his family shared a deep bond of resilience tempered with humor. Growing up in Upper Michigan, he taught his children many life skills. He was generous, often surprising them by making pancakes, pies, and birthday cakes. He could also demand order in a busy house. Because church was so sacred to him, getting the giggles during mass was terrifying, prompting memories of hopelessly trying not to laugh.

James was preceded in death by his infant brother Leo, his sister Catherine (Clark) Smith, his brother-in-law Jerry Smith, his sister-in-law Bonnie Clark, his favorite dog Pogo, and his parents. He is survived by his wife Judy Clark, brother Ted Clark, first wife Sally (Guzek) Stuermer, daughter Vanessa (Gene) Dietz, son Jim (Holly) Clark, daughter Cathy Clark (Andrea Leonard), daughter Mary (Dave) Rogers, son Tony (Kim) Clark, daughter Margaret (Dave) Alstead, daughter Sue (Rick) Towns, and daughter Connie (Pete) Millington, many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
