Jay H. Zimmer, age 90, died on July 29, 2008 at the Aspirus Ontonagon Long Term Care Unit. Jay is survived by Ruth (Henry), his wife of 61 years; brothers Francis (Fritz) and Gene and sisters Betty and Darline (Roden); children Sally of Mt. Pleasant, MI, James of Hibbing MN, Mary (David Blackwell) of College Station, TX, and Betty (Terry Freeman) of Marquette, MI; grandchildren Kirk Gunderson, and Jamie and Jason Freeman, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Vernon, and his son John.
Jay was born July 15, 1918 to James and Anna (Chenette) Zimmer in Ontonagon. He graduated from Ontonagon High School with the class of 1936. He was a veteran of World War II. He served in the army from 1941-1945, primarily in the Pacific Theater. Jay returned to Ontonagon on the Chippewa train from Chicago at the end of the war. He worked for National Container Corporation and then White Pine Copper Company until he retired in 1981. Jay was a great cook. He loved gardening, fishing, hunting, and, especially, making dry comical remarks.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 2 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. The Cane Funeral Home is making the arrangements. Offerings in Jay's name can be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, 515 Pine Street, Ontonagon, MI 49953.
