"Jack" Bailey

John R. "Jack" Bailey, 84 of Ontonagon passed away on Friday, December 14, 2007 at Maple Manor. Jack was born on January 19, 1923 in Ontonagon to John S. and Beryl (Hill) Bailey.
Jack graduated from Ontonagon High School in 1941, served in the US Navy receiving an Honorable Discharge in June 1946. He served on the USS Casablanca in the Pacific theater during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy, Jack returned to Ontonagon and married Phyllis M. Sommer on a rainy January 15, 1949. He worked for Rosemurgy Hardware in Ontonagon for over 40 years, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed the shores of Lake Superior, fishing, and hunting at Camp 12, retiring from Camp 12 in 2006.
Jack is survived by his wife Phyllis; his brother Eugene of Chicago; five children; Linda (Charles) Anderla of Colfax, Wisconsin, Edward J. Bailey of Chicago, IL, Byron G. Bailey of Iron Mountain, MI, Larry G. Bailey of Ontonagon, and Chad (Tammy) Bailey of Lebanon TN; eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marion, and one child. Visitation will be from noon to1:00pm on Monday, December 17. Funeral service for Jack will be at 1 p.m. Monday, December 17 at the United Methodist Church in Ontonagon; Cane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Internment will be in the spring at Riverview Cemetery.
