Joseph A. "Butch" Leu, 83, of Mass City, MI passed away on January 11, 2024, after a lengthy illness at Westgate Nursing Home in Ironwood, MI.

Joe was born in East Jordan, MI to Joseph and Fay (Shepard) Leu on July 3, 1940. He graduated from East Jordan High School in 1958. He married Mary E. Borgen on June 9, 1962. He graduated from Michigan Technological University in 1963 with a bachelor's degree, from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 1965 with a master's degree, and from the University of Alberta in 1969 with a PHD, all in physics. He was a professor at several universities over the course of his career.

Joe is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary; their children Paula Leu, Edward (Stephanie) Leu, and Debra (Marc) McCloud; their grandchildren Rebecca McCloud, Logan McCloud, Karina Walker, and Isabel Leu; his sister Verna (Stanley) Sweet; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents; two infant sisters and his brother, Thomas Leu; and his niece, Amy (Mitch) Sadona.

A funeral service will be held on May 20. 2024 at 11:00am at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7855 Rogers Road, East Jordan, MI. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Afterwards, the family invites attendees to a luncheon in the church fellowship hall.
