October 11, 1961 – May 6, 2020
Kenneth Joseph Shafer (K.J.) 58, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2020 at the Omega House in Houghton, MI with his loving sister by his side, following the diagnosis of cancer. He was born October 11, 1961 in Ontonagon to Sandra (Topel) Shafer and Raymond Shafer, residing in Mass City. Ken was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
He loved rabbit hunting with his beagles Cindy and Susie, and partridge hunting in the fall. His other hobbies were fishing, skiing and snowmobiling. Ken also pitched in the Lake of the Clouds Little League Association for Mass-Greenland team, being coached by the late Clyde Patana. He attended OAHS and later received his GED.
Ken's life changed when being diagnosed with a mental illness in early adulthood. He received services through CCMH and worked in the supported work shop, at "The Car Wash." Ken was blessed with having two families, living at New Beginnings AFC home for 14 years. He was loved and cared for by Tina, Peggy, staff members, and resident friends. He loved to go to the Casino, and enjoyed family get togethers, holidays, birthday parties and spending time with his sister, niece, nephew and their children.
Ken is survived by his mother Sandra (William) Schirmer of Tucson, AZ, and father Raymond Shafer of Ontonagon. His sister Sheri Lynn Shafer of Ontonagon and a brother Mark Shafer of San Jose, CA; His nephew Luke Drier and his children Adeline and Rhyatt; niece Erin Drier and her children Rhyker and Colt; his Aunt Carol and Uncle Bud (Carl) Duerr of Canandaigus, NY; cousins Dawn, Billy, Terry, Bryan, Laurie and Kevin.
He was preceded in death by his Uncles, Richard Shafer and Jeff Fredrickson; his Aunt Karen Shafer (Heikka).
A celebration of Life burial will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery (Greenland) at a later date.
The Cane Funeral Home is assisting the family.
