Laila Chapman, 89, of Ontonagon passed away peacefully on Monday, December 25, 2006, at The Maple Manor Nursing Center.
Laila was born on November 17, 1917, to Liisa and Matt Kangas in Painesdale. She lived much of her young life in Painesdale and South Range. She was a graduate of the Painesdale High School and The Northland Beauty School in Marquette and worked as a beautician for many years in South Range and out of her home in Ontonagon. On May, 1944 she married Robert Chapman and they celebrated their 62 wedding anniversary this year. Laila worked at Chapman's Ace Hardware which she owned with her husband and son. Many people will remember her handing out candy when they were children and came into the store with their parents. She genuinely loved people and visiting with all of her customers either at the beauty shop or the hardware store.
Laila was a life-time member of the Eastern Star Society, a life-time VFW member, a member of the United Methodist Church and many various organizations throughout her lifetime.
She is survived by her husband, Bob, her son Rob (Kathleen), one grandson, Jeremy (Tanya), and two great-grandchildren Zoe 2 and Ava 5 months old.
Laila enjoyed baking for her family, reading a good book, loved hearing and telling jokes and laughing. She very much enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her grandson Jeremy and her family.
Visitation will be on Thursday, December 28, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Ontonagon one hour before the church service with a luncheon to follow. Cane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
