Obituary

Lucille Margery Johnson of Ontonagon, former banker, golfer, and stewardess, earned her wings and is now flying the friendly skies. Lucy, 95, passed away on September 23 at Gardenview Senior Living Center in Calumet.

Born Lucille Beck on December 27, 1930, she was raised by John and Mary Beck and was the youngest sister to Ethel and Wesley. Lucy attended Ontonagon High School where she met future husband Ronald Johnson. They were married for 71 years and had two sons, Todd and Dean.

A proud Finlander, Lucy was an outdoor enthusiast. An avid golfer, she never got a hole in one, but she did mistakenly hit fellow golfer Huck Freimuth with a ball. Twice. She bowled, skied downhill and cross country, played volleyball, and could have won a gold medal in housecleaning.

Lucy was a successful career woman. After high school she kept the books for Hawley Lumber Company and later was accepted into the United Airlines Stewardess School in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Once while flying out of Chicago, she realized that she knew the flight Captain – it was her own brother, Wesley. In 1957 she started as a bookkeeper at Citizens State Bank and was eventually promoted to vice president and auditor. Her career at the bank spanned 36 years.

Lucy had superb taste in clothing and liked to shop at Marshall Field’s. She also enjoyed traveling. Her happy spirit will be missed, along with her delicious recipes from the St. Paul Lutheran cookbook and the way she would insist while cooking, “get out of my kitchen!”

Lucy is survived by her husband, Ron, her two sons, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Julie.

A service is planned for Saturday Nov. 7, 2026, at 11:00am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ontonagon; a reception will follow.
