Obituary

Lucille Merrill of White Pine died December 29, 2007 after a long struggle with cancer at the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.

She was born January 4, 1919 in Bellevue, Iowa to Elmer and Wilhelmina (Krumviede) Hammerand. She had the most beautiful red hair and was very pretty. She grew up on her parent's farm during the depression and was no stranger to hard work. Lucille worked for Gibson in Chicago prior to her marriage. She married Lafayette Merrill on May 20, 1946. They met after World War II in Chicago when Lafayette was asked to look in on her as a favor to her boyfriend who was stationed in California. They fell in love instantly. As a girl she attended school in Bellevue and played the harmonica in a local band. She went back to school and received her high school diploma in 1975 at White pine.

She and her husband farmed in the Powers, MI area. They moved to White Pine in 1953.

Survivors include husband Lafayette, 5 daughters, 2 sons, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister and one grandchild.

Lucille Farmed, raised 7 children and loved to sew, crochet and read. She was an environmentalist and donated to many causes and was a staunch Democrat. To those who new Lucille, she will always be remembered as kind and sweet. She loved her family dearly.

A memorial service will held at Faith Lutheran Church in White Pine on January 12th at 11 a.m. In lue of flowers, donations would be preferred donations be given to the Humane Society at www.hsus.org.

The Cane Funeral Home is assisting the family.
