Martha Alina Burbridge 89 passed away peacefully into eternal life on Sunday morning August 19, 2007 at Ontonagon Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care Unit. She had been a resident there for the past seven years.
Martha was born in Ewen to the late Wilho and Susanna (Smith) Sirvio. She lived in Detroit for most of her life, having gone there in 1935. She worked at Highland Park General Hospital for a few years and it was there where she met her husband Homer Burbridge. They were united in marriage on February 25, 1940. Together they operated a small corner grocery store in Detroit until he passed away on August 12, 1952. After his death she continued to run the business until 1990 when she retired and moved to Ontonagon.
Martha was an avid reader and wrote poetry among her other talents. She was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church having served as Secretary-Treasurer and taught Sunday school for many years. Martha did missionary work also in her local area and beyond. Her heart was always with the foreign mission field.
Along with her parents and husband, Martha was preceded in death by 10 brothers, Waino, Walter, Edwin, Wilho, Emil, Victor, Alvar, Sulo, Arvi and Erwin and 3 sisters, Viola Myhren, Armida Mattatall and Linda Maki.
She is survived by 2 sisters Sylvia Cobb of South Elgin, IL and Melba Pantti of Rockland as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services for Martha will be held at the Cane Funeral Home on Saturday August 25th at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Elmer Liimatta officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will take place at the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon.
