Marvin W. Takala of Ontonagon died March 31, 2010 in Hancock, MI.
He was born April 19, 1925 in Ontonagon, son of the late John & Katrina Takala. Marvin attended the Ontonagon Schools, graduating in 1943. Following graduation, Marvin entered the U. S. Navy at Great Lakes, IL. He was stationed at the Navy Base in Gulfport, MS. Marv also served as a gunner on the U.S. Cincinnati in the Atlantic & Caribbean area until his discharge in 1946.
On November 11, 1943 Marvin married his classmate Marjorie Alice Daniels in Ontonagon. To this union a son, Gerald was born in Gulfport, MS and a daughter Julienne in Ontonagon.
After his Naval discharge, he was employed at Muskatt's Department Store in Ontonagon for several years. Later, Marvin operated the Mobil & Sinclair gas stations and also was employed at the First National Bank as a cashier. He finished his career with the Ontonagon County Equalization Department, serving for 18 and 1/2 years as a Certified Assessor. Marvin retired in 1991.
Marvin was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Ontonagon and served as Congregational President, Elder and Treasurer for a number of years. He also served on the Ontonagon Village Council and the Board of Trustees for the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital. Marvin was a member of VFW Post 5600 and the former VFW Drum and Bugle Corp.
He was an avid fisherman and proud of his walleye catches. Marvin was known for his late night fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Waino, Oliver, Kaino and Ted and his sisters Dagmar, Elvie, Lillian and Viola.
Marvin is survived by his wife Marjorie, children Dr. Gerald (Molly Lee) Takala and Julienne Takala, grandchildren Michael and Jonathan Takala, great-grandchildren Nicholas and Morrigan and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 3rd at 1 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ontonagon with Pastor Howard Neider officiating. Friends may call at the church Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon with military rites preformed by the Ontonagon County Veteran's Association.
