Mary Ione Wagner, 85, of Ontonagon passed away Friday, January 18, 2013 at Aspirus Grand View Hospital in Ironwood.

Mary was born in Detroit to Bernard and Grace (Hermann) Byrnes on May 6, 1927. She graduated from St. Mary's Redford High School. Mary was an excellent stenographer, and following graduation, she worked at a grocery store, Holley Carburetor, and J. L. Hudson's.

She married Richard Wagner on July 26, 1952 in Ferndale, Michigan. He preceded her in death on February 27, 1985.

Mary worked with her husband in the insurance business in Ontonagon. She enjoyed gardening and canning for many years. Mary also enjoyed hunting grouse, boating, and water skiing. She liked to hike in the woods and to pick berries. Mary loved to walk on the beach collecting agates and driftwood. Watching and feeding wildlife was one of her favorite pastimes. Mary was a devout Catholic.

Besides her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her sisters Kate Byrnes and Frances Kane; brothers Bud Byrnes, Edward Byrnes and Bob Byrnes.

Mary is survived by her sister Grace Niekamp of Minster, Ohio as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be held at a later date. The Cane Funeral Home is assisting the family.
