Mayme Irene Nurmi, 91, of Bruce Crossing passed away on Wednesday morning, June 18, 2014 in Ontonagon at the Aspirus Long Term Care Unit.
Mayme was born January 6, 1923 in Paynesville to the late Robert and Hilda (Alapert) Hiitola. She attended local schools. She was married to Emil Nurmi on March 28, 1942 and they made their home in Bruce Crossing. He preceded her in death on September 5, 1959.
Mayme worked briefly at the Paynesville school as a cook. She spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was an avid watcher of Finland Calling, loved old westerns and old-time country music. Mayme was a member of the Paynesville Apostolic Lutheran Church. If you knew Mayme, you loved Mayme.
Survivors include sons Roy and Michael of Bruce Crossing; daughter Edith (Bill Newby) of Maryville, TN; daughter-in-law Barbara Nurmi; granddaughters Amy (Dennis McCarthy), Peggy (Donald Grosso) and Lisa Risku; great-grandchildren Shaun, Cheyanne, Dylan, Katelyn, Paige and Bodey; several nephews and nieces; and special friend Alberta McGinty. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mayme was preceded in death by sons Carl and George Nurmi and 13 brothers and sisters.
