Norman Kaarto, 90, of Ontonagon passed away on January 21, 2022 in Iron River.

He was born in Trimountain, MI on May 16, 1931 to the late Eino & Helen Kaarto of Mass City. Norman was a Korean War Veteran and served in the U.S. Army. He received 3 bronze battle stars and several medals.

Norman was married to Charlotte Pasanen on October 10, 1953. She preceded him in death on August 2, 2002. He was employed at the White Pine copper mine and later worked construction in the Detroit area.

Norman loved his family and enjoyed the outdoors. He and Char spent a lot of time at camp. Doing little things around the camp. He enjoyed hunting, stream fishing as well as trapping in his younger years. Norman was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ontonagon. He was a member of the VFW Post 5600 in Ontonagon.

Norman is survived by his 2 daughters Bonnie (Robert) Wink of Macomb, MI and Sallie Fiore of Utica, MI, 4 grandsons Kenneth (Nicole) Wink, James (Stephanie) Wink, Michael Fiore and Anthony (Tori) Fiore, 3 great granddaughters, 2 great grandsons, 4 sisters Florence (Ron) Sandve of Cumberland, WI, Jeanette (Norman) Juntunen of Farmington Hills, MI, Joyce (Don) Liuska of Alma, MI and Doris (Dave) Carlson of Nisula, MI as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother Gary Kaarto & sister Marie Alapert.

A church service and graveside burial with military rites, are scheduled on May 21st, 2022. Funeral Services at the St. Paul Lutheran Church will start at 10:00am.  The burial will take place after the service at Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon with OCVA as well as active military represented to do military rites.

A luncheon will take place afterwards at the Konteka in White Pine, MI.
