Onni J. Maki, 92, of Mass City passed away at Marquette General Hospital on March 25, 2011 after suffering a heart attack. Onni had entered the Bayside Village in L'Anse on March 17 to join his wife, Evelyn, and was there 8 days before suffering the heart attack.
Onni was born in Mass City on June 6, 1918 to Onni Maki, Sr. and Lydia (Turin) Maki. He graduated from Mass High School in 1936 and married Evelyn Anttila on June 24, 1940. Other than 2 years spent in the Army in the Philippine Islands, Onni & Evelyn lived in mass city their entire life, within sight of both of their family homes.
Onni worked at the Mass City sawmill as a young man, and had various jobs driving heavy equipment and mining, and retired as Foreman for the Ontonagon County Road Commission in 1982. He loved to fish, play the guitar, mow the lawn with his riding lawnmower and plow snow. He measured the snow for Ontonagon County for 25 years and was known as the "Snow Man."
Onni was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilhart; sister-in-law, Margaret Maki; and nephew, Richard Maki.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathy (Don) Hanley of Plymouth, MI; Corinne Barthell of Malibu, CA; grandson, David (Amy) Hanley; and great-grandson, Brian Hanley of Livonia, MI. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Onni and his wife, Evelyn will be held Thursday, March 31, at the Cane Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will take place Friday, April 1 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mass City with visitation at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m.
