Philip D. Olson, 86, of White Pine, passed away Monday, March 28, 2011 at the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital Long Term Care Unit.
Philip was born May 17, 1924 in Tapiola, Michigan to parents Axel and Eva (Kallunki) Olson. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. In 1948, he married Myra Kommos, who preceded him in death in 1988. In the mid-1950s, Philip worked as a saw man in the woods near Toivola as well as at the White Pine Copper Mine, where he later worked in the surface shop as a blacksmith.
He was a proud member of the White Pine American Legion Post 462. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family and friends,
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myra; and brothers, Charles and Andrew Olson.
Philip is survived by his sons, Larry, Gene (Natasha), and Wayne (Sharon); grandchildren, Wayne Jr. (Cheryl), Jill (Mark), Kiersten and Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Matt, Megan, Melissa, Michael, Nathan, Jesse and Hannah. He is also survived by brothers, Stuart, Robert, Leonard and Peter; sister, Anita; and aunt, Ruth Kallunki Peltomaa.
A Memorial Service for Philip will take place Thursday, March 31 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cane Funeral Home. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
The family requests that memorials in Philip's name be made to the White Pine American Legion Post 462.
