Reed Andrae 93, of Port Washington, WI formerly of Ontonagon, MI died October 13, 2015 at his residence.
He was born October 21, 1921 in Ithaca, NY, the son of William and Ida (Reed) Andrae. He graduated from Cornell University in 1942. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army from 1942 to 1947. He married Margaret Elaine (Margie) Campbell of Ewen, MI on August 22, 1945 in Ithaca, NY.
From 1948, he was employed by Florida State University, University of Tennessee, Oklahoma State University, and Nationwide Food Service and then later at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL from 1961 to 1982 where he received his Master's Degree, retiring as the Director of Auxiliary Services.
Becoming dissatisfied with retirement, he became an Instructor of Hotel Management at University of Wisconsin-Stout from 1982 to 1987. Later, he did consulting work for Chicago State University and Marquette Solid Waste Management Authority.
In the span of Reed's career, he and Margie lived briefly in Austria where he finished his military service. They then lived in NY, FL, TN, OK, IL, WI and MI. They were in DeKalb, IL for 21 years, where the raised their family. They moved to Ontonagon from Marquette in 2000.
Reed is survived by sons Peter (Patti) of Port Washington, WI and John of Eureka, CA, and his grandchildren Chloe and Lula Andrae of Eureka, CA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Reed and Margie moved to Port Washington, WI in 2007, and spent their final years there.
He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his parents, a sister Marjhene and his in-laws Dr. John and Lula Campbell, both last of Ontonagon.
He had a wide variety of interests and accomplishments. Among other things, he was a photographer – having built his own darkrooms, and a musician who could play the clarinet, piano, guitar and ukulele among others. He played in the city band for years, until he moved from DeKalb. He spoke both French and German fluently. He loved to cook – and eat, and enjoyed a good cocktail and sometimes a good cigar on a special occasion. He was well read, travelled extensively, had many friends and knew some corny jokes. He had a great memory, frequently telling stories about people and places with clarity and detail. He enjoyed company and loved to entertain. He rarely forgot a name or a face.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, October 16th at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon. Friends may call at the church 1 hour prior to the start of the Mass. Internment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Ewen, MI. The Cane Funeral Home of Ontonagon is assisting the family.
