He was born October 8, 1920 in Ontonagon, the son of the late Charles and Lila (Langille) Hebert. He graduated from the Ontonagon Township High School with the class of 1937. Bob was a veteran of World War II, having served during the Battle of the Bulge. Fifty years after the war he made many trips back to Luxembourg and Belgium and was honored by them, with a monument in his name, as the last man in the 9th Armored Division, Company C, to leave the area. She preceded him in death on October 26, 1996.
Bob learned to play the guitar at young age and had a lifelong love of music. He played with various groups in the area, including Texas Ted and the Country Playboys (Kurt Giesau and Ted Meindel), having last played with the Eddie and the Polka Dots from South Range. He was proud of the KOTP (King of the Pickers) nickname one of his musician buddies gave him.
In his early years he worked at the paper mill, drove truck for Ross Distributing, and went to work for White Pine Copper Co. when it opened, retiring from there in 1982.
He is survived by his three daughters, Roberta (Bill) Chabot of Ontonagon, Charlene (David) Allie of Marquette, Judy (Kenny) Roehm of Ontonagon and sister Charlene Klein of Ontonagon. He is further survived by nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Ethel Zartner of Ontonagon, brother-in-law Robert Schneck of Ontonagon, a very special friend, Elsie Byrne of Baraga and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James Klein, Hazel and Norval Barry, James Zartner, Judy Schneck, Raymond and Doreen Schneck.
