Robert Toivo Lukkari 78 of Mass City passed away May 26, 2014 at his home.
Robert was born on September 4, 1935 to Toivo & Jennie Lukkari of Mass City, MI. He graduated in 1954 from Mass High School. Robert served honorably in the army for the Battery B, 62nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 6th Armored Division, discharged in 1958. On February 13th 1960, Robert married Kay Marie Myhren of Ontonagon and resided in Mass City, raising four children, Todd, Michele, Shawn and Tiffany Lukkari.
Robert worked in the construction trades until he and his brothers (Ron & Hubert) formed Lukkari Brothers Construction. Later, he formed Robert Lukkari Inc., where he became licensed for the State of Michigan as a Master Plumber, Boiler and Mechanical and in residential construction.
Robert served as an active member of the Greenland United Methodist Church, was a member of the Greenland Township Volunteer Fire Dept., Adventure Mountain Lions Club and the Greenland Township D.D.A. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Wyandotte Hills Golf Club and the Ancil Hoffman Golf Club of Northern California. Active in hunting and especially looked forward to the Michigan annual firearms deer season and spending time at the camp and cottage. Robert had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He enjoyed being with them and attending their many functions.
Robert is survived by his wife Kay of Mass City, children Todd (Janice) of Mass City, Michele (Paul) Lukkarila of Sacramento, CA, Shawn (Vonda) of Mass City, Tiffany (Jim) LaBine of Columbus, OH, grandchildren Nathan & Elyssa LaBine, Noah & Nicole Lukkari, Nikolai & Kaylan Lukkarila, brother Ronald Lukkari of Mass City, sister-in-laws Garnet (Wesley) Maki of Ontonagon, Marlene (Dr. Stephen) Sramek of Madison, WI, Colleen (Kenneth) Nelson of Ewen, brother-in-laws Randy (Connie) Myhren of Ontonagon, the late Rodney (Nancy) Myhren of Mass City as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Tovio Lukkari and mother Jennie Lukkari-Kaspala, step father Raymond Kaspala, brother Hubert Lukkari and in-laws Walter and Lucille Myhren.
Friends are invited to gather for a visitation Friday, May 30th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Greenland United Methodists Church in Greenland, MI. A memorial service will be held Saturday May 31st at 11 a.m. at the Greenland Township Community Center (Former Mass School building). Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Greenland, MI.
