Robert J.
Mazurek
March 23, 1933 – August 31, 2025
Robert J. Mazurek (Bob), beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-great grandfather has passed away at 92 years old. He was born to Steve and Florence (Gregorich) Mazurek in Ontonagon, MI. As the oldest of 8 children, he was responsible to help a lot with chores on the farm. At 15, when his dad's health declined, he quit school to do the farming, wood cutting, etc., for the family. He was proud to be able to play hockey with the local team (The Red Wings) in the early 50's. In 1954 he enlisted in the Army and proudly served until the fall of 1956 at Camp McGill in Yokosuka, Japan. He was in charge of base housing, supervising 87 employees and custom inspections for GI's coming from or returning to the US.
Upon his return to Ontonagon in the fall of 1956, he was Assistant Manager at Fraki's Market for Gordie Kallunki. After a year there, he became employed at Hoerner-Waldorf Paper Mill for 11 years. During that time, he married the former Janice Berg in 1958, and together they built their home and raised their family He also held the position of Ontonagon Township Supervisor, Assessor, and served on the County Board of Supervisors. In addition, he served on the Ontonagon Housing Commission, Park Board, and 2 years on the Village Council. He resigned from the paper mill to accept the position of Administrator of construction and operation of the Ontonagon Medical Care Facility. He held that position for 11 years, until he purchased and operated Mazurek's Clothing Store. He also drove the school bus for 23 years during store ownership and after until retirement.
Throughout his life, he was active in the Jaycees, 4-H, Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, Communion Minister, volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul store, as well as helping neighbors and friends. He always enjoyed gardening, friends, relatives, and placed family as #1.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Kay F., Patricia, Billy and Benny, and a stillborn son.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Janice, his children Mary Joan, Bob (Trish), Martin (Patricia), Teresa, Dan (Anita), Jerry (Angie), Margaret (Richard), Jim (Amy); 22 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren with 16th on the way. He is also survived by siblings Lawrence, Mary Jane (Ron), Jack (Mary), sisters-in-law Mary Lou and Bethel, and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place as requested. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in Bob's honor.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, September 8th, 2025 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon, MI. Visitation is from 9:00am- 11:00am, with Memorial Mass to follow at 11:00am. Burial with military rites from OCVA immediately following the service, at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Ontonagon, MI.
