Robert Michael
Provenzola
Dec 9, 1956 — Sep 12, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Michael Provenzola, who was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 9, 1956 to Frank and Shirley Provenzola. Bob passed away on September 12, 2026 in Ontonagon, Michigan, surrounded by the beauty of the forest he loved so deeply. There is comfort in knowing that his journey came to a close in a place that held so much of him-the land he loved, the cabin he built, and the quiet contentment he found there.
Bob grew up in Redford Twp., Michigan and graduated from Thurston High School in 1974. He went on to attend college at University of Michigan, making the field of Chemistry his vocational endeavor, working for companies such as Transtar, Tremco, and RedSpot. Bob later founded AGXGOLF, a company proudly serving the golf industry for over 25 years.
Remarkably well-read and endlessly engaged with ideas, Bob thought deeply about life-its meaning and complexities, and the forces that shape the world we live in. At his core was a lifelong desire not simply to know but to understand. As a research and development chemist, Bob brought to his work the same curiosity, creativity, and drive to solve problems that would characterize so much of his life. Among his professional accomplishments was the invention of Hydroflex, a product he patented in 1996 while working for a subsidiary of BF Goodrich.
Bob was never one to shy away from a challenge. With an extraordinary work ethic and natural ingenuity, he found great satisfaction in creating things from the ground up-two homes, a thriving business, and philosophical essays that gave form to his beliefs. His mind was rarely still, always questioning, reflecting, and making connections in a way unique to his character.
Bob's ingenuity and grit were perhaps nowhere more evident than in the cabin he built by hand in Ontonagon, Michigan over forty years ago. Constructed from timber he harvested from the property itself, it was more than a cabin-it was a testament to Bob's resourcefulness and craftsmanship. The land, and the cabin he created from it, held a special place in Bob's heart and gave him a deep sense of pride and contentment. Simply put, Ontonagon was Bob's happy place.
Golf was another of Bob's great passions, one he especially enjoyed sharing with his father. Over time, that passion became the inspiration for AGXGOLF. Through the company he built, Bob found a way to combine his love of golf with his desire to build and create. But what he built went beyond the business itself. Bob took great pride in being able to provide opportunities for others, and he cared deeply for the people who worked alongside him at AGXGOLF.
For all that Bob accomplished in his life, he remained a down-to-earth man with simple needs. He wasted little, valued what he had, and found enjoyment in life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed sharing an IPA with friends, engaging in a good debate, or cheering endlessly for his beloved Detroit Lions. Music was another simple pleasure, and Bob often wound down the day playing his guitar or harmonica.
Among those who will carry Bob's memory forward is Cheryl, his Sweetie of fifteen years, with whom he built a life filled with love, devotion, and a shared spirit of exploration. At the heart of their love was a fundamental belief that love grows deeper when two people freely choose one another each day. And they did. Bob and Cheryl shared a desire to experience the world together, a spirit that led them to some of its most extraordinary places. They marveled at the pristine wilderness of Antarctica and moved among the wildlife of the Galápagos Islands where the world exists with a rare innocence. Bob's love of hiking took them from the remote northern reaches of the Canadian Rockies to the southernmost stretches of the Andes Mountains, and many places in between. These adventures were only a small part of a life filled with discovering what lay beyond the familiar.
As much as Bob loved to explore the world, it was the people in his life that mattered most. He loved his family deeply and demonstrated that love in countless ways, often through remarkable generosity. He took his mother to Ireland to fulfill one of her lifelong dreams, played Santa Claus at Christmas, and made cards by hand with his trusty box of Crayola Crayons. Whether through a grand gesture or something much simpler, Bob found genuine joy in doing good for the people he loved.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Shirley Provenzola.
He is survived by Cheryl Peters, with whom he shared fifteen wonderful years of life. He is further survived by his siblings, Thomas (Lola) Provenzola, Danielle (Timothy) Bulbuk, Theresa (Ted) Beatty, Mary Fox, and extending to his nieces and nephews, Emily Fox, Jesse Fox, Maggie Fox, Brent (Savannah) Bulbuk, Jason (Danielle) Bulbuk, Gina (Eric) Hansen, Karly Smothers, Philip (Loredana) Smothers, Jesse (Abby) Smothers, and eight grandnieces and grandnephews-along with the many friends who joined his adventures, mutually enriching the journey of his life.
There will be a Celebration of Life downstate held in Bob's honor on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
