Roberta, "Bertie" May, long time resident of Watersmeet, MI joined her loved ones in eternal life on Tuesday, August 9th, 2022. Bertie passed peacefully at home. Born in Maple Grove, MI on July 4th, 1931, to John & Maude (Jenkins) Norman, Bertie was raised in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of MI where she met and married Clifford "Bud" May.

They moved down state for a bit and also lived in Minnesota but planted tier roots in Watersmeet where the raised their two boys-Floyd and Neil. Bertie gained quite a reputation as a cook at both the Hi Hat Supper Club and the Tiajuana Supper Club in Land o' Lakes, WI. She eventually switched from cooking delectable dinners in WI, to preparing the best breakfasts in the UP at the infamous Minnie's Cafe (later known as Clem's and The Peppermill) in Watersmeet, where she finally retired. Bertie had many loyal customers from near and far and also many coworkers over the years. She had quite a presence in the kitchen that included a good sense of humor. Bertie always said "I'm not a chef! I'm a cook because I wash my own pots and pans!"

Bertie left a lasting impression on the community. On her 89th birthday she proudly led the Watersmeet 4th of July parade as Grand Marshal. In her retirement Bertie enjoyed crocheting, reading, watching game shows and the company of her cats-Lucky and Patches.

She is survived by son Neil of Watersmeet, who was her trusted companion and caregiver in later years: grandson Sheldon of Lac du Flambeau, several great grandchildren and many extended family.

Bertie was preceded in death by her husband "Bud", her eldest son Floyd, and sisters-Marlene and Grace (Regenfuss).

As per Bertie's wish there will be no formal funeral, memorial service or Celebration of Life. On her 91st birthday last month she reminisced and gave thanks for all the memories she had after 91 years and reflected on all of the changes she had experienced along the journey. She was at peace.

Donations may be made to the family to help with burial expenses.

She will be laid to rest in the Watersmeet Township Cemetery.
