July 28, 1949 – February 15, 2025
Roger William Halquist, age 76, of Bruce Crossing, Michigan, passed away after a long illness on February 15, 2025. Roger was born in 1949 and raised in Bruce Crossing, MI. He was the son of Lila (Murto) and Harold Halquist and had one sister Jean (Mongeon).
Roger is survived by his wife Irene Halquist (Wiedemeier); his son Josh Halquist (Evelyn) and grandchildren Dakota and Maila Halquist and step-grandchildren Ashley, Patrick, and Timothy; his daughter Tanya Rule (Brian) and grandchildren Makena and Tyler Rule; his nephew Mark Mongeon (Becky); and his nieces Carole Halquist, Yvonne Raether (Terry), Monique Gordon (Matt); and many great nieces and nephews.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Lila Halquist, his son John Halquist, his sister and her husband Jean and Gerald Mongeon, and his niece Yvette Lee.
Roger graduated from Ewen High School in 1967. Roger was a student athlete participating in wrestling, boxing, and track and field. During high school, he worked for the Settlers Cooperative store delivering milk and working in the feed mill. He attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette Michigan, where he studied mechanics and heating and air conditioning. After college, he worked for Briggs & Stratton in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he met his wife Irene (Wiedemeier). Returning to the U.P, Roger worked for the Copper Range Company's White Pine Mine as a mechanic underground between 1974 and 1976. He left the mine during a layoff and started his career at the Ontonagon County Road Commission, from which he retired after 32 years working for the county.
Roger loved tractors, carpentry, making homemade knives and axes, hunting, fishing, and gardening and was an active union organizer and past union president and involved in many political campaigns as the past chairman of the Ontonagon County Democratic Party.
A Celebration of Life will take place on June 7, 2025 at 2pm at the Hillside Cemetery in Bruce Crossing with Pastor Ted Trudgeon officiating.
Cane Funeral Home of Bruce Crossing is assisting the family with arrangements.
